How It All Started
You might ask, why is it called Blackbird Power Racing?
The Kelly and Clark families count Blackbird Power as part of their families, so when they decided to venture out on this exciting new Company it was an easy choice to honour the horse that will live long in their memory.
Blackbird Power is a Pacer and is the first horse that Gavin and Andrew raced together. Now in retirement, Blackbird Power spends his days in Gavin’s paddocks in Tasmania. Blackbird Power’s racing career brought plenty of excitement to Andrew and Gavin with 29 wins for Gavin and 24 in their joint ownership, many of which Gavin trained and drove himself.
So we pay total respect to the horse that gave his all and hopefully we have the same luck and joy again.
Meet the Team
Andrew has been in and around racing since 1998. Starting out as a Photo Finish Operator and Judge, Andrew commenced full time with Canberra Racing Club in 2003. He was promoted to the role of Chief Financial Officer in 2006 and Chief Executive Officer in 2018 until his departure in 2022. Andrew’s skills, expertise and knowledge of the Racing Industry and ownership syndications has placed him in good stead to take fellow owners on the ride of a life time with him.

With a renowned eye for a quality horse, Gavin has produced winners as a Breeder, Trainer and Driver of Standardbred horses. His ability to pin point a quality horse on appearance and through his analysis of form sees Gavin as an integral member of the Blackbird Power Racing team. Another key strength Gavin brings to Blackbird Power Racing is his exceptional risk analysis. Gavin has a strong history of identifying and pricing risk to promote success.

Paul Perry is a leading Provincial Trainer based at Broadmeadow Racecourse, Newcastle. Across his career Paul has amassed an impressive 3,850 plus winners including 12 Group 1 wins and $60 million in Prize Money. He is well known for his trailblazing trip to the UK in 2006 when he and his Colt Choisir conquered Royal Ascot winning both the Kings Stand Stakes and Golden Jubilee Stakes.
